5 Tips for Being a Responsible Pet Parent

To continue our theme of pet love we are bringing you 5 great tips on responsible pet parenting! February is ‘Responsible Pet Owner’ month. This was created to help spread helpful and healthy pet ownership practices and hammer home that pet ownership isn’t just puppy breath kisses, but a big responsibility. Pets aren’t just a trendy fashion accessory but a living breathing companion that requires the respect and responsibility afforded to any member of your family.

Pet Proof Your Home

To help keep your pet healthy and safe it's important to find out which household chemicals and items might be harmful to your pet. Make sure you either remove or secure them in a way your pets can’t inadvertently hurt themselves.

Spay and Neuter

Not only does getting your fur baby ‘fixed’ help control the stray population but pets who have been spayed and neutered live longer and live healthier lives over all. Also, you don’t have behavior problems stemmed from raging hormones.

Integrate Them Into the Family

Cats and especially dogs need human contact and love to feel safe and comfortable. Dogs are pack animals and they want to feel like they are an important productive member of your pack. Even if your pack’s most strenuous activity is doing a marathon on Netflix, dogs especially want to be a part of your family.

Always Use ID Tags

Id tags and microchips can help you locate and identify your pet should they get stolen or lost. Also worth checking out is The Kitty Convict Project. This fun named project is aimed at helping protect and identify cats who have escaped outside and may need a little help being located and returned home.

Socialize Them

An anti social pet is usually scared and might be aggressive too. So, its best to socialize them early and a lot. If you have a dog this could mean exposing him/her to a dog park where they can meet new dogs and people in a safe environment. In a cat its a bit trickier, but having people over to your home early in your kitty development can help them be accustomed to being around other people.
