Staying Safe in the Summer Sun

Staying Safe in the Summer Sun

We know, it’s a beautiful clear day. The seagulls are calling and the tropical breeze is blowing, but before you start running for the beach this summer take the time to learn the tips to protect yourself from UV rays. Every year nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer in the United States. The culprit for this cancer is ultraviolet (UV) rays. These cancer causing rays come from the sun and other sources like tanning beds, which are the #1 cause of skin cancer. Too much exposure to the sun or a tanning bed can also cause sunburn, eye damage, and premature wrinkles. But there are simple steps you can take to protect your family and yourself.

  • wearing clothing to cover exposed skin
  • using a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
  • seeking the shade

Sunscreen should be worn everyday, but especially during the summer months as the sun is stronger and the days are longer. But when shopping for sunscreen be sure to read the label before you buy. Choose a sunscreen with “broad-spectrum”protection. Sunscreens with this on the label protect against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays contribute to skin cancer and premature aging. Only products that are labeled “broad spectrum.” have been tested. Products that aren’t broad spectrum and haven’t been tested will carry a warning that they only protect against sunburn, not skin cancer.

Stay safe out there and remember ‘water resistant’ doesn’t mean waterproof. So re-apply regularly and don’t forget to stay hydrated!

  • 2 bell peppers, chopped
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 head garlic, peeled
  • Approx. ¼ cup lemon juice
  • Approx. 1 cup olive oil

  6. Serve with the garlic sauce you kept.
  7. Enjoy!
