The Healing Properties of Green Tea

Green tea is made from leaves of the camellia sinensis plant and is native to East Asia, the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia, but it is today cultivated across the world.

Today green tea has been the subject of many studies and has been found to have a high concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols and tea flavonoids known as catechins. These polyphenols help combat free radicals by neutralizing them.

What are free radicals?

Free radicals are produced in cells by cellular metabolism and by from external factors. These free radicals react negatively with biomolecules in cells and may cause damage, including damage to DNA. Free radicals can cause damage to several parts of cells such as proteins, DNA, and cell membranes through a process called oxidation. The resulting damage to DNA and cell membranes is implicated in the development of cancer and thought to be a cause of aging. (This is why free radical damage is also called “oxidative damage.”) — substances that can alter and even kill cells in your body, causing premature aging, cancer, and other diseases

How can you benefit from drinking green tea?

Fighting free radicals with green tea can have all kinds of benefits: Here are some reasons to add green tea to your diet.

  1. Research shows that drinking green tea may help protect from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, this may be due in part to the extract epigallocatechin gallate, which has showed promise against skin cancer in recent lab tests at the University of Strathclyde. In another study recently published in the Journal of Nutrition, researchers in Germany found that women who drank about six cups of green tea per day had less reddening of their skin when exposed to the sun.
  2. Several studies show that green tea helps to lower cholesterol. In recent studies green tea was shown to significantly reduce the level of harmful LDL cholesterol in the blood when paired with a diet low in trans fats.
  3. Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones become brittle and fragile. Studies are beginning to conclude that drinking green tea may improve bone mineral density. Researchers, in a new study, may have also found that green tea contains a group of chemicals that helps generate new bone growth and limit its breakdown.
  4. There is evidence that free radicals play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease and that the polyphenols in green tea can help fight these free radicals. Researchers have found that polyphenols may help prevent the buildup of damaging proteins, as well as help prevent memory loss and improve attention span.
  5. A number of studies show that green tea benefits include protection against certain cancers. Particularly it may be most effective against ovarian, bladder and esophageal cancers. However there has also been very promising research in its ability to help reduce risk of breast cancer.
  6. There is some evidence that drinking may play a role in helping to prevent diabetes and an extract may help lower blood sugar in those who are prediabetic. One study found that adults who drank more than six cups of green tea a day had a much lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who drank a cup or less a day.
