6 Ways to Stick to Your Resolution
I know its hard, sticking to that resolution you made. It seemed like a good idea at the time right? Your buddy is making it look way too easy. Doubt starts to creep in and that chair is awfully comfortable. And man, oh man, how long has it been since you had a treat? New Years was forever ago, right?
It's really hard to stick to a new plan, regardless of what time of the year it is or what it is, especially if your expectations are not in the realm of reality. It's gotten so stereotypical that they even have a date and name for this. Quitters day, it’s the most likely day when people give up their New Years Resolution, and it just happens to be the 12th of January. That’s not even a full two weeks into the new year before most people give in and give up.
So in an effort to push the clock a little, let's shoot for February 1st at least, here’s 6 Tips for Sticking to that Resolution.
One Bad Habit at a Time
There’s really no reason to hype up the Resolution by adding a whole basket of life changing goals at the same time. In many ways this is a self sabotaging tactic on our parts. So if you’ve already committed to five different goals, try pairing it down a little rather than giving up on them all.
Realistic Goals to Start
This is a major issue for most people. They have unrealistic expectations for their goals. First they think that losing weight on a drastic scale can be obtained in a month or two, when the reality is it takes work and many months if not a year or more to see the goals you idealize. People often overestimate how much they can achieve within a month and underestimate how much they can do in a year.
Create a Community Around it
Share your goals and experiences with others. This solidifies the goal into a tangible reality rather than just a collection of thoughts bouncing around in your grey matter. Sharing can help motivate you, especially if others get involved, and it helps you hold yourself accountable by making the goal shift from obligation to duty.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Never ever, ever be afraid to ask for help. Especially if your first starting out on some goal that you have next to no experience in. No one expects you to get it all correct in the beginning, and as stated previously these are long term goals and require the time to mature. Part of that maturing is growing into your goal.
Give Yourself a Break
Learn to forgive yourself. Failing is not the end and doesn’t mean you should stop trying. Failing is a learning experience that will allow you to grow into your new goal. A cheat meal here and there doesn’t hurt, especially when fat loss is considered over the long term. Skipping a single workout isn’t going to derail your whole plan. Forgive yourself these lil missteps, and then get back to it. Don’t forget you had to learn to crawl before you could run.
Do it for the Right Reasons
Ask yourself why you are doing this? Is it for you? Is your why a strong enough motivator? For some people exercising isn’t enough reason to lose weight. A lot of times you have to bring in that fear of death and disability to get people really motivated. What are the consequences of you NOT following through? The best motivator is a consequence you simply cannot tolerate.
